⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Shouto Todoroki
Age: 15
Canon: My Hero Academia
Canon Point: ch. 95

Background: "Isn't it a hero's job to save people?"

Personality:

To explain Todoroki Shouto, one should start from the very beginning.

When Shouto was young, he was a wide-eyed, warm child. He idolized heroes - especially All Might, the number one hero - and wanted to be just like them, and to make his mother proud. He was, definitely, a mama's boy. However, he was isolated from other kids, even from his own siblings, and put through rigorous training not suitable for a five year old. This never managed to break his spirit, as he had his mother on his side, and could always look to heroes like All Might for an example of how to act, rather than just looking at his father as his only influence.

Until his mother, suffering under the strain of Endeavor's abuse and the marriage she'd been forced into, snapped. As a result of her throwing boiling water into his face, Shouto was permanently scarred and she was hospitalized. But rather than blame her, Shouto realized even at a young age that it was his father's doing - and thus whatever warmhearted kindness in him was replaced by loathing and spite for Endeavor, and he began his disavowal of both him and the powers he received from him.

And this is how we meet him.

Shouto, at the beginning of the series, is a distant, aloof, stoic character. He comes into Class 1-A without having to take the entrance exam, and this, along with his general attitude towards other people, puts further distance between him and his peers. Though he's efficient and observant, and shows his intellect periodically prior to opening up, he makes it very clear with his attitude and words alike that he's not at Yuuei to make friends. It presents itself in a blunt nature, as he's not someone to mince words to spare feelings, no matter how rude he might come off as. In fact, sometimes he's a little crass, though nowhere near as bad as Bakugou. (He outright uses "bastard" sometimes to refer to people, specifically villains, and calls his father his "shitty old man.") It makes him seem even more closed off from others, and he doesn't really appear to care all that much about the cause and effect of this.

In fact, his behavior doesn't seem very hero-like early on. While he does show concern for classmates and others, it doesn't necessarily seem heartfelt. It seems more like he does it because it's expected of him, as a hero in training. This is made even more evident when he interacts with the villains that broke into the USJ, as he states that he doesn't want to kill them simply because it would put a mark on his record as a hero.

This cold nature is largely due to his upbringing, both because of how Endeavor raised him and because he closed himself off even further. He was trained to become the strongest, and to become his father's tool, rather than his son or a hero that's a hero to help people. It's resulted in a great deal of control when it comes to his abilities and situations, both combat-oriented and intellectual, but also in a distance that is generally hard for people to bridge, including himself.

That isn't to say that he's emotionless, however, as Shouto feels things very strongly. Whether he knows how to address or express these emotions is another thing entirely, but what manifests itself most obviously is his temper. It's difficult to rile him up to that degree, but it's there - there's no way it wouldn't be, when he's obviously someone that's stubborn as all hell and refuses to back down from most anything. His temper is, literally, fiery when it's ignited, and the one way he's learned - perhaps, even, the way that he was taught - to release it is to put it all into his quirk and destroy whatever target he's focused on at the time.

His isolation, however, has obviously taken a toll on him.

While he does seem to have a good relationship with his oldest sister, he's... well, awkward with other people when he's simply interacting with them. He's overly serious, and isn't quite sure what tends to be casual or normal for teenagers. After Izuku managed to rekindle his childhood dream, however, he's obviously been making an attempt to open up a little more to his classmates, at the very least. And with the reminder that he wanted to be a hero like All Might, who's there for people who need help, and is a supportive, good person, he's actually warming up to others as well.

In the end, Shouto just wants to be a good hero. He's the kind of hero, the kind of person, that now feels responsible if he can't help someone, and will do anything to ensure that he won't fail those around him. While he's not completely healed, and does have a lot of issues still relating to his father and his upbringing, specifically, he's starting to heal in a way that is setting him down the right path. Rather than closing himself off and putting himself up onto a pedestal, he instead is becoming a team player who will offer encouragement to his classmates, because someone went so far as to reach out to him and offer it to him.

That doesn't change the fact that he's still blunt, and can still be a little callous, but Shouto isn't really mean so much as that's just how he is. He's smart, but he has a bit of a smart mouth, even if it's a little bit tempered these days. Not enough, maybe, to hold his tongue when he's fighting for something he believes in - which is doing right by the people, and being a hero worthy of the title rather than just looking to be number one - but he does think before he speaks to choose his words. It's just that it's a little sharp sometimes. But there isn't any reason to be anything but honest, and now he can try to be a little more honest with himself, as well.

Abilities:

Due to his extensive training since his childhood, and his powerful quirk, Shouto is said to be one of the strongest students in his class, having been one of the students that was invited to the school rather than having to apply. In fact, he's cited as being the strongest, and his stats and tactical, logical mind lend to this very well. His power and technique are both A-rank (5/5), his speed and intelligence are B-rank (4/5), and only his cooperativeness is C-rank (3/5), although given developments in the series since these stats were officially released that one in particular may need an update.

In terms of non-quirk abilities, he's fast, resilient, and strong, being incredibly fit and a competent fighter. He's capable of withstanding a lot of damage so that he can keep fighting, and even some powerful hits only wind him briefly rather than causing much damage. (ie; fighting Stain the Hero Killer despite multiple injuries where he was bleeding badly, taking hard hits from Midoriya Izuku and Iida Tenya and getting back up again without much issue.) His reflexes are astounding, as well, especially for someone his age. Shouto has very little trouble throwing up split-second attacks and defenses in the thick of things, and making decisions on a dime.

But when it comes to quirks, Shouto was "created" rather than "raised." His father sought out what's called a quirk marriage, arranged marriages that are intended to strengthen the bloodline and power of specific quirks. Flame Hero Endeavor, number two in the world of heroes, sought out a strong ice quirk user and proceeded to have numerous children with her in an attempt to cultivate an heir that would overtake All Might in terms of power, so that if he could never take the number one spot, then his legacy would.

Thus, Shouto, his masterpiece. His quirk is extraordinarily powerful, and his control is rigid because of the excruciating training that he's been through since he was a little boy. Having inherited both his father and his mother's quirks, this control is necessary in the grand scheme of things - the right side of his body is capable of generating ice, whereas the left side of his body is capable of generating fire. This allows him to regulate his body temperature when using his quirk, which is necessary given the sheer level of power output he has at any given moment, and the effect that his quirk can have on his body.

(His cold side will cause his body temperature to plummet, resulting in weaker attacks and an adverse effect on him physically. His heat side's drawback has yet to be revealed, although the probability of heatstroke is likely given the risk of frostbite.)
❄ For a long time, Shouto relied only on his quirk's ice side, as his father's abuse of both him and his mother resulted in her snapping and permanently scarring him on his heat side. So, to spite him, he used his mother's powers only. This has resulted in him having a great deal of control over them, as well as them being incredibly powerful, despite the drawbacks that come with using them exclusively. He has been shown doing small scale tricks, like cooling and frosting things over, but also overtaking entire buildings in a layer of ice, and even creating massive ridges that dwarf stadiums and (mock) neighborhoods.

Shouto can also use this half of his quirk as supports for teammates, such as making arcs and slopes of ice to send them flying, and jettisoning them with pillars of ice. The walls of ice are also good for shields and protective enclosures, as well as stabilizing (such as locking him in place during a windstorm or the like).
However...
🔥 After Izuku helped him come to accept that his fire side is his, not his father's, he's thus been working to strengthen and get better control over this half of his quirk. Like his cold side, he's capable of smaller scale skills, such as igniting small flames in a controlled environment. But while he can use his fire abilities both offensively and defensively like his ice abilities, in this case he needs to keep the flames away from his allies and civilians in the event that he can hurt them. It's one thing to have minor exposure to ice, but another thing entirely to be exposed to open flame like that.

Much like his ice abilities, he's been shown using blasts, waves, and walls of fire, but with far more caution due to environment and the presence of other people. Especially since he's still learning to control this aspect of him better.
Neither side has any physical adverse effects simply from touching him, even when it goes so far as to destroy his clothes (which is why he has a uniform that helps him regulate his body temperature, and is fireproof), but overuse could result in the aforementioned problems.

Unfortunately, Shouto is a little emotionally repressed. For the most part his emotions are bottled up, but his powers become more overkill than they already are when he lets those emotions come to the surface. So that'll probably wind up being his effect on the world around him - setting his left side on fire and frosting his right side, and affecting the environment around him similarly if he's not careful, when his emotions are stronger.

Alignment:

Sosyne. Generally speaking, most people see Shouto as an incredibly calm, cool (ha) person. It's one part keeping his quirk under control, one part being somewhat emotionally withdrawn. He actually has a bit of a temper underneath that calm exterior, and it's a little vicious when it's unleashed. So Sosyne is a good reflection of this, and of the nature of his quirk as well.

[ Emotions.

Shouto finds the idea of a place that runs on emotions a rather dangerous one, to be honest. He's spent so much of his life learning control, and is unfamiliar with them beyond a certain point, that he's not entirely sure why he was chosen to come here. He's listened to enough people talk about it, now, that he's sure he can figure it out, but at the same time... he's not necessarily sure he wants to. His powers as they are, their foundation is the control of his emotions, and it's been made all the more obvious on multiple occasions what happens when he lets go of that tight control. When he lets his emotions loose.

Wisely, he moves to the outskirts of civilization, to make sure that he doesn't burn or freeze anything that can't take the damage - including people - before he makes any attempts at understanding what this has in store for him. But he brings with him one of the emotion-sensitive devices, some kind of... spring? He's not sure what it's for, even after having been given the sales pitch. Regardless, it might come in handy.

It's still a little strange to be sitting out in the middle of nowhere, staring at a spring, but, damnit. He's going to figure out how to control this new skill if it's the last thing he does.

So Shouto takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, brow furrowed and lips pursed into a thin line. Something more... positive, probably.

Though it takes a little time - he's still new to that kind of mindset, and it's harder for him to fall into sometimes - he thinks about his sister, and how she's always been supportive. He thinks about his mother, and their slowly rekindling relationship. How Midoriya had reached out to him, when no one else had. His victory with Yaoyorozu against Aizawa, how they'd worked together when they'd figured out how to. The retreat, before everything went to hell, before the villains had shown up, how his classmates had been his friends for the first time.

He hears something, and cracks open his grey eye to see what it is.

The spring rolls and coils right up to him, and he has to blink both eyes open as it winds around his hand where he has both of them settled, palm-up, in his lap.

Curiously, and though it's hard to detect with how his body regulates temperature, the air around him seems a little warmer as well. Shouto has to double check his left side, to make sure that he's not lit up with fire. When he sees it isn't, his shoulders slowly relax, and he looks down at the spring, curling his fingers around the twist of it.

... maybe this won't be so bad.
